Energy Grant Opens Up New Career Opportunities for Hartford Students

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 30, 2011 - Hartford, CT, Maynard, MA & Denver, CO – Energy consumption in the United States is expected to increase by 49% by 2025 yet there may not be enough qualified workers to handle the demand. A new project presently underway, the EPCE Smart Grid Workforce Development Grant, is committed to ensuring there is a skilled workforce to replace the estimated 50% of technical workers that are set to retire in the next five to 10 years. Funded by a U.S. Department of Energy workforce and training grant and administered by the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) on behalf of the Energy Providers Coalition for Education (EPCE), the project is committed to training 1,800 current and future industry workers on smart grid technologies through the end of next year.

Representing approximately 70 percent of the industry workforce, EPCE (http://www.epceonline.org) is a unique national coalition of industry organizations that partners with higher-education to develop, sponsor, and promote online learning programs to help the energy industry meet its workforce needs. This grant project is also conducted in partnership with Virtual High School Global Consortium (http://www.govhs.org), the pioneer of K-12 online learning and course design for teachers, Northeast Utilities (http://www.nu.com), operators of New England's largest utility system, and Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) Education Foundation (http://www.cbia.com/edf/) whose mission is to help develop a skilled, knowledgeable workforce in Connecticut.

Twenty-two students from the Academy of Engineering and Green Technology, most of which are going into their senior year, were selected to participate in the two-year project. It began with a four week, hands-on internship and will continue with two specially-designed online courses created by Virtual High School (VHS), but facilitated at the Academy. Starting next month, students will take Mathematics of Electricity: Careers in Electric Power and, in the spring, Renewable Energy and the Smart Grid.

For over 10 years, VHS has been creating specialized online courses for institutions and grant-funded projects as an extension of their mission to equip middle and high school students with 21st century learning skills and prepare them for future careers. All VHS courses are delivered co-synchronously and taught by VHS teachers who actively teach in classrooms at VHS member schools.  All are certified in their specific discipline and have completed a graduate level professional development program in online teaching. Instructors facilitate and continually monitor all courses, engaging students in discussions, and assessing each individual student's progress.

As part of the grant, 1 dodge 1 high school students from Hartford's Academy of Engineering in Green Technology spent this summer learning about OSHA compliance, how to operate heavy equipment, developed an understanding liquefied natural gas (LNG), electricity and more through a paid summer internship at Northeast Utilities subsidiaries, Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas.

Tom Burns, director of training at Northeast Utilities, is overseeing the student internships at Northeast Utilities. NAFA Supports New Standards For Heavy-Duty Trucks And Buses Announced By White House

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 19, 2011 - On August 9, President Barack Obama announced a national program of standards for work trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles with the goal of raising fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This follows the announcement made a few weeks earlier to more than double the current Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) Standard to 54.5 mpg by 2020.  NAFA Fleet Management Associatio 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 n, comprised of fleet professionals throughout the United States and Canada, has followed these rulings closely.

"Fleet managers need to be aware of these new standards and plan for their implementation in the next few years since they may change their operations to some degree," said NAFA's Executive Director, Phillip E. Russo, CAE.

According to NAFA's Legislative Counsel in Washington, D.C., the final ruling closely follows the initially proposed rule and places the mandates on the manufacturer and not the purchaser.  NAFA supports the new standards.

The U.S. Departmen goverment technology t of Transportation (DOT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed the standards in close coordination with the companies that met with the President as well as other stakeholders, following requests from companies to develop the program.  The oil savings standards proposed will save American businesses an estimated $50 billion in fuel costs over the life of the program.

Under the new national program, trucks and buses built in 2014 through 2018 are slated to reduce oil consumption by a projected 530 million barrels and greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution by approximately 270 million metric tons. As with the Administration's car standards, this program, developed primarily with off-the-shelf technologies, was constructed in coordination with truck and engine manufacturers, fleet owners, the State of California, environmental groups, and other stakeholders.

The vehicles that are involved with this program include combination tractors (semi-trucks), heavy-duty pickup trucks, and vocational vehicles first drive audi a6 such as delivery trucks, buses, and garbage trucks.

The report gives us both bad and good news; let's begin with the good ones: car accidents are diminishing. But the number of accidents caused b 2011 Chrysler 200 Convertible y hit-and-run drivers is not decreasing, on the contrary, this phenomenon is still a very crucial one on Italian streets, and it seems to become more and more widespread. In the first six months of 2011 the number of hit-and run accidents has increased by 39%, 347 accidents in total. The number of victims was 55, with an increase by 44,7% in comparison to th 2011 Dodge Durango R / T e first six months of 2011. Also the number of injured people makes us understand how serious the problem is: 418 is the total number of injured people. As far as the data concerning the different Italian regions are concerned, the regions where there has been the higher number of accidents caused by a hit-and-run driver is Lombardy (50 accidents), followed by Latium and Emilia Romagna, both with 38 accidents, Campania with 35, Tuscany with 32 and Veneto with 31. Also the percentage regarding the number of women that cause accidents and run away is increasing.

When the accident is caused by a hit-and-run driver, rage adds to the sorrow of the relatives and friends of the victim, and these feelings are fueled by the fact that it is not always possible to find out who has caused the accident and bring him/her to justice. In spite of the efforts of the police and of other people in charge of this, it is not always possible to identify the person that caused the accident. In the first six months of 2011 it was possible to do so in 66,3% of the cases, a lower percentage than last year, when the guilty driver was identified in 78,3% of the cases.

One of the main reasons why hit-and-run mustang car drivers run away after causing an accident is that they have taken alcohol or drugs before. Among the hit-and-run drivers that have been identified, indeed, 20,4% had positive alcohol tests, and some of these people had also taken drugs (8% of the people that had a positive alcohol tests also tested positive for drugs). However, these data are approximate, and most probably they do not mirror reality: the situation might be much worse than that: many hit-and-run drivers, indeed, are taken, or give themselves up, after a certain time span, when the effects of drugs and alcohol are not traceable anymore.

In order to limit the number of accidents and victims caused by hit-and-run drivers, in September the Italian Parliament will discuss the introduction of the crime of road murder in the Highway Code. This crime would be punished with a sentence of 8 to 18 years, the definitive license withdrawal – in some cases – and the arrest in flagrante delicto.
