PRLog (Press Release)– May 25, 2011– Nikki M. Jenkins is an accomplished playwright, actress, and singer. Her new musical comedy Disenchanted will be featured in the 2011 Planet Connections Theatre Festivity in June. Disenchanted boasts a three-week sold out showcase at Theater for the New City in 2010 and the show was awarded a Space Grant from the Looking Glass Theatre in January of this year. An African-American actress, Ms. Jenkins wrote Disenchanted as sharp-witted social commentary on the pressure on women to live up to the "Barbie Standard" of beauty.
A graduate of the East Carolina University School of Mus audi ic, and a proud member of the Actors' Equity Association, Nikki Jenkins leads a very active career in theatre and film. A long time member of Theater for the New City, Nikki toured for three summers with the annual Street Theater Tour. She also enjoyed two tours as Harriet Tubman in the well known TheatreWorks/USA production, Freedom Train. Trained in classical voice, Nikki had the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall as a featured soloist with Dr. Bruce Vantine's Cornerstone Brass Quintet and Chorale in 2009. Currently, Ms. Jenkins is a member of the Greenwich Village Follies Theatre Company with Manhattan Theater Source. This May, she played Edna Burke/Lorelle (understudy) in the "Dreamgirls" benefit concert with ReVision Theatre. Her film credits include several new comedic web series, including Therapy, Drama Queenz, and Sherry's Kitchen. Ms. Jenkins will also be starring as "Amanda Gottadolla" in the upcoming stage reading of Disenchanted on June 21st at the Robert Moss Theater.
The synopsis for DISENCHANTED is as follows: Amanda Gottadolla (MANDI) has it all. The adopted daughter of multi-millionaire moguls, this sassy New York socialite seems to live the perfect life. But things aren't always what they seem.
Everyone has a story, and Mandi's is quite an unusual one. Once upon a time, the fabulously rich (but childless) power couple Mr. and Mrs. Gottadolla adopted an African-American baby girl. But when media melee and racial backlash ensued, the overprotective parents resolved to shield their daughter at all costs. They removed all mirrors from the house except for one, and hired a beautiful blonde orphan named Ashley Sue to play Mandi's "reflection." Mandi grew up happy in her chrysler illusion of perfection--until she lost her mother and father in a tragic accident. Now it's up to her boyfriend DANIEL and twin besties BEE-BEE and DEE-DEE to protect Mandi from the truth. Their well meaning deception continues without a hitch, until an unfortunate run-in with Moneydales employees STEPHEN Q. BURKOWSKI and MARGARITA. Act I concludes with the disgruntled duo concocting a plan to end Mandi's ignorant bliss.
Act II takes place six months later, and much has transpired. Mandi, who's always had Broadway aspirations, has written and produced her own off-off-off Broadway show, "$now White and the Seven Lil Gangstaz." And who's starring as the Fairest One of All? Mandi, of course! All goes well until Stephen and Margarita sabotage the production. In the guise of the Evil Stepmother, Stephen unveils a "Magic Mirror" (ironically, a real mirror) and confronts Mandi with her own reflection. Mandi, realizing that her whole life has been a lie, is devastated. After some soul searching--and a word of wisdom from Barack Obama himself--Mandi realizes that being African-American in no way diminishes who she is. She also makes an important confession; that on some subconscious level, she always knew she was Black--she just didn't want to see it. Realizing that Black truly is Beautiful, Mandi is finally ready to embrace reality--for better or worse. Our story ends with Mandi forgiving everyone, including herself, while vowing to find her birth mother and become the woman she is destined to be.
"DISENCHANTED" is a fantastical tale with a very real message about learning to love yourself from the "outside-in."
HOW IT CAME ABOUT
The creation of "DISENCHANTED" has been qu corsa ite a journey for author Nikki M. Jenkins. Originally titled "Denial! Time to Face the Musical," Nikki first workshopped her piece in April 2009 with the Frank Silvera Writer's Workshop. In July of the same year, it received a stage reading at the Matthew Corozine Studio Theatre. Positive feedback prompted Ms. Jenkins to submit her developing musical to Th rc helicopter and car market place eater for the New City's Scratch Night Emerging Playwrights' Program. It was accepted and presented as a one night Equity Stage Reading in September 2009. This led to a showcase at Theater for the New City, where it ran from April 15 - May 2, 2010 and quickly became 1086274749 a top grossing production. In 2011 Ms. Jenkins became the latest recipient of the Looking Glass Theatre Space Grant, where "Denial!" was presented for 8 nights as a concert revue. Upon the completion of that run, Nikki M. Jenkins and Aaron Pratt teamed up to revisit, revamp, and resubmit this work to the 2011 Planet Connections Festivity as "DISENCHANTED."
